Forever Strong

The pounding of hooves,
A dark summer's rain
The fate of the herd
Forever in vain

My mother's song gnawed at my mind, her voice rising and falling in a sorrowful lullaby. The words meaning more than just a song, they were my father's life.

Fighting the others
Fleeing from lions
Stumbling for footing
Struggling for life

My black hooves struck through the moist fallen leaves. The large trees bent in a flimsy attempt to stand. Vines tickled my sides, carressing my cheeks.

The buzz of the bee
The touch of love
Spring is in season
But rest is not allowed

My ears twitch forward at the call of a bleating fawn, a deer dying slowly, suffocating in last attempts to escape an anaconda.

Forever fighting
Forever falling
LIfe's unending battle
When death seems more welcome.
