Layla glanced at Phoenix with apologetic eyes. "Sorry if it hurt. I didn't mean it." She said, sitting next to him protectively. "Do you want to share the elk?" She asked politely.

Phoenix sighed. "No. I'm not hungry."

Layla nodded, and nibbled a bit on the elk. She wasn't too hungry. "How does your foot feel?" She asked, cocking her head.

Phoenix huffed. "It's fine." He pulled it against his body harder with a glare at her.

Layla sighed heavily, and laid down to rest. Why couldn't he understand that she was trying to help!?

Phoenix got up and left the den, tail flicking. He could sense her frustration and didn't feel like dealing with it.

Layla watched him. She got up and padded out to get a drink from the river. Layla's beautiful aqua gaze rested on the stars above, and huffed as she drank. Kaitlyn was then at her side. "You OK?" Kaitlyn asked. "Fine. Just fine." She lied. "I know you, Layla. What's up?" Layla growled in frustration. "Its just. Phoenix doesn't seem to appreciate anything that I do, even though I am basically treating him like an Alpha." Layla replied. Kaitlyn sighed. "Try talking to him."

Phoenix walked in the forest, tail flicking. He limped, but found he could actually apply pressure to it. The skin was getting more scabby and the fur was growing back, slowly but surely. It was patchy and scruffy and he knew it would feel like dry mud for a long time.

Layla went to find Phoenix. Her heart raised when she did. Taking a deep breath, Layla stepped out of the shadows. "Phoenix. I was wondering if you wanted to stargaze with Kaitlyn and I?" She asked politely, her gaze flicking back and forth from him to the den where Kaitlyn was.

Phoenix looked at her. "Star-what?" he asked.

"Stargaze." She replied. "Its when you look up at the stars with someone and make out shapes of them." Layla told him, flicking her ears nervously.

[Blackberry]

Phoenix snorted. It sounds like a pup's game. But he sighed and said, "Okay."

Layla padded with him to the den, and laid down. Layla gazed up at the stars, but at the very brightest one. "You miss your mother don't you?" Kaitlyn asked. "Yeah." Layla replied.

Phoenix rolled on his belly, his back to the females. His father had gotten killed by a bear, and his mother had raised him until she died of sickness. He sighed, ears flat against his head.

"Phoenix, what's wrong?" Layla asked, nuzzling his shoulder to comfort him. She could sense his sadness.

[Blackberry]

Phoenix grunted. "I just miss my parents, that's all," he said.

Layla's heart felt crushed. She laid beside Phoenix, gently licking his shoulder. "I feel the same way." She replied, sighing.

Phoenix said nothing, just stared at the sky.

Layla sighed and gazed up at the stars with Kaitlyn.

Phoenix heaved himself to his paws and padded into the den, tail flicking.

After about an hour, Layla and Kaitlyn padded into the den. Layla laid next to Phoenix, with Kaitlyn at her side.

The male let out a huge sigh, his body heaving.

Layla soon fell asleep next to Phoenix, her breath soft. She dreamed happy dreams.
