the Barn owls of the Redwood Forest (pg)

Albus leaned forward, bent his legs, and thrust himself off of the old redwood branch. he was a young barn owl, about one year in age. but one year is when he reaches sexual maturity. he has one year to live his life to the fullest, and that is exactly what he plans to do.

At first he glides through the air, his white wings and body contrasting the black sky, making him appear ghost like. his pupils dilate when he catches movement in the rustling leaves below him. he springs into action, twisting and maneuvering his body and wings. his talons are inches away from the small rodent. he tucks his wings in and extends legs even more, and clinches the prey in his sharp talons. the mouse lets out a squeal before it's body hangs limp and the owl flies back to his favorite perching and hunting spot.

Albus holds the mouse against the branch and uses his curved beak to pick out little pieces of flesh. he tosses his head back, and the flesh flings itself into his mouth. He bobs his head while swallowing.

Then Albus spots another barn owls nest forty feet up another redwood tree with his wide, sharp, eyes. he starts circling it in a way of courtship.

[Harley]

Ava ran her eyes over the forest floor, talons clutching the branch she sat on tightly. A sudden flash of movement caught her attention, and she nearly dove off the branch, wings slightly tucked as she headed towards her prey. The large mouse sensed her the moment her talons tucked around it.

Ava lifted herself and her breakfast back up to her nest, hooking her sharp beak into the mouse. She sensed a presense not to far away, and peeked over the edge of the nest to see a male barnowl circling.

Deciding on being passive, Ava went back to her mouse.

When there was no response, Albus let out shrill twittering screech. this was another act of courtship. he continued by giving short chattering calls and screeches. he continues to circle the female in flight.

[Harley]

Ava twisted her head around, looking at the male owl who circled her. She let out a shrill cry back to him, puffing up her feathers and chattered back at him. Inbetween noises, Ava picked at her mouse.

(sorry i am not very educated about the courtship of barn owls so these next parts i am making up.)

Albus accepted her invitation to fly closer. he landed on a nearbye branch in the same tree. He looked up at Ava and gave soft chattering noises. he spread his wings out and hopped up to the next branch next to Ava.

(neither am I)

Ava edged closer to him, chittering softly as she reached out her head to examine him. she turned from him, inviting him to follow her into the nest. Ava clicked her beak with affection, organizing the nest as she waited.

Albus shuffled his wings onto his back and fluffed up the feathers on his neck. he gave softer chattering noises now, as he entered the nest site. he went over to the other owl and ran his beak through the feathers on her neck . he picked up a feather and ran the feather through his beak. he moved up to short fine feathers on her head, grooming her affectionately.

[Harley]

Ava watched the owl, clicking her beak as she returned the favor of grooming. She ran the feathers on his neck through her own beak, leaning on him gently as they groomed eachother.

Albus began to make low soft noises coming from his chest. He stepped his right talon onto her back, and gently hopped the other onto her back as he spread his wings out. Albus flapped his wings a few times to keep his balance on the female barn owl. he lowered the lower part of his body down next to her tail, searching for her opening. he continued to make low sounds from his chest.

[Harley]

Ava felt the weight of the owl on her back, and hobbled forward slightly, a little nervous. Her legs bent even more when his full weight was on her, and she spread her wings a little to keep her balance. The owl wasn't sure what was going on, only that it felt natural.

Albus found her hole and pushed his lower body against hers. he began to make screeching noises as he mated with her.
