The large black pickup pulled into the lot, its breaks squeeling slightly as it came to a jolting stop. The battered driver door opened, and large brown cowboy boots crunched on the gravel. The boots belonged to a man, very tall, well tanned and muscled for his older age. He had black hair, with flecks of grey in it. He was wearing a black T shirt, tucked into his faded blue jeans. Another door opened, and a smaller pair of boots hit the ground. They belonged to a youthful teen, with beautiful green eyes, and long amber blonde hair that fell gracefully past her shoulderblades. Imedietly, the girls eyes swept the perimeter, taking in the yellow police tape, the flashing lights, and most of all, the horse that was standing in the middle.
Her heart almost broke.
The poor, poor animal had been subject to terrible abuse and mistreatment. Madison glanced at her father, and he stepped forward, greeted by a police chief. They spoke a few words, and exchanged a few nods, making an understanding with eachother. Meanwhile, Madison had slipped under the yellow tape, and inched closer to the horse.
.
The animals ribs could clearly be seen, and every vertebre on its spine protruced down its back. Its eyes were sunken, dull, and glazed over, and its head was hung, muzzle inches from the ground. Several scars wrapped around his sides and legs, some open and bleeding, the flies buzzing around the wounds.
Feces coated its hide, and Madison couldn't even see what the horses true color was under all of the grime. She took a deep breath, and stepped forward, keeping her eyes down and her shoulders hunched, showing that she meant no harm. The gelding raised its head a tiny bit, its sad, hurt eyes eying her with fear.
Madison held out her hand, a half of carrot laying in her palm. Slowly, very slowly, she approached the horse. He snorted softly, eying the treat, but didn't make a move to eat it.
She very slowly, very gently untied the leadrope that held the animal to the post, letting it drape in her hands. The horse only looked at her, fear and pain in those dark eyes. She placed the carrot on the ground near the horses muzzle, and then stood, keeping her distance. The horse lowered his muzzle, and sniffed halfheartedly at the carrot, before his lips twitched and he moved it around. But he didn't eat it.
Madison could see that the horse was very ill, and stepped forward. The leadrope put light pressure on his halter, and he stepped forward, his overgrown hooves scraping against the dusty ground.
