Silence (PG-13)

[Blackberry]

Silence. More pain. And then more silence. Then a loud thud. I rose to my paws, my ice-blue eyes glittering coldly. My victim lay crumpled beside me, his blood pooling out of his throat and his eyes and glazed. He may have looked dead, but soon, he would rise, and become another one of my... minions. My sleek black body slid through the shadows with ease, and my paws moved over the ground silently. I crossed the street and into the alley, where I leaped over the fence. My paws landed on a garbage can, and let out no noise. I twitched my whiskers once as the sweet, meaty aroma of spaghetti and meatballs filled my nostrils.

I tracked the scent towards the back of a spaghetti parlor. I smirked as cats were in trash cans, looking through the cans for any leftovers. I narrowed my ice-blue eyes and my smirk faded. Didn't these... mortals know that this alley belonged to me? I walked across the cans with ease, and as soon as I was spotted, the cats raced away, tails tucked in between their legs. I ate until I was full, and just for fun, I groomed myself slowly, took a small nap, and left. As soon as my tail disappeared, I peeked through a hole in the wood and saw the cats approaching the cans again.

Yes... you could say I was... popular. But not in a good way. I am the Midnight Murderer, or, just Silent. I prefer the name Silent, since the name Midnight Murderer sounds too mysterious. I kill cats and turn them into minions- or, mindless zombies with pupil-less eyes that wander around the city until they're shot, hit by a car, or die from thirst and/or hunger. Sure, they were dead. But I could summon them with a powerful spell, and they would rise and haunt the city once more. Once a minion is spawned three times, I can't make them rise again. I tried it once- and believe me- I couldn't move my eyes for a whole week.

I climbed up a staircase and on top of a building and sat on a ledge, my tail flicking back and forth. I watched my city as a car came this way, and another car drove past. I watched a woman get drug into an alley by a masked man, and her screams of terror and pain filled my ears. I clicked my tongue twice and shook my head. Foolish girl, I declared. Monsters roam the streets at night. I tilted my head slightly so that the moon reflected off the chips of eyes of my eyes. Monsters like me.

I jumped from the building and raced to the alley. The man was beating the woman with his fists, and occasionally kicking her. No, no no. Normally, I would just watch, but today, I felt helpful. I trotted over to the man and leaped on his back, and dug my claws and fangs into his neck. The man screeched once before collapsing to the ground, writhing, his pupils beginning to fade away. I glanced at the woman briefly. She was rubbing blood from her face and clothes, crying softly. As our eyes met, her eyes widened.

"The... the Midnight Murderer!" That's right. Even humans knew who I was. Sometimes, I would enslave a human. But that was normally when I grew bored of my so called feline species and wanted a challenge. She began to back away, clutching her purse. I snorted once, tossed my head, and trotted off. As I left, the shadows turned into shapes and wrapped around the woman. Her shrieks were cut off with gurgles as blood seeped out of her mouth.

Mystic

I slinked along in the shadows, wishing I had a black coat instead of a white one and black eyes instead of an icy blue. I froze when I spotted a male and female human and a cat that called himself the Midnight Murderer in an alley. I watched quietly as he killed both the male and female, my icy blue eyes narrowing to give them an even deeper icy blue. This male did not scare me, in fact he intrigued me.

My tail wavered to the side, letting my newly formed heat scent waft towards him. I wanted him to notice me and I knew this should do the trick. My heart fluttered a little as I watched him trot off, admiring the elegance and grace with which he moved. Jealousy threatened to overtake me as I noticed he had a black coat, unlike my white one, but I would not allow it. The only thing that moved on me were my icy blue eyes following his every movement.

Soon I mustered up the courage to step out of the shadows into view, my white coat sparkling like diamonds in the moonlight. My heart might have been pounding but it was with excitment not fear. "Hello, Silent." I said, my voice like the sound of bells but a little deeper and with a slight edge to it. My fur ruffled in an unseen breeze as I watched to see if he would turn. My thoughts raced, part of me wanted him to turn and notice me, the other part wanted him to keep walking and not notice me. Eventually the part that wanted him turn and notice me won out so I stood a little straighter tried to emanate confidence from my tiny, white body.

As I strolled out of the alley, I heard a voice. My ears pricked and I narrowed my blue eyes as they landed on a small white she-cat with blue eyes. She was truly beautiful- her round, intelligent blue eyes and her snow-white pelt. And the best part was that a heat scent was wafting from her, which caused my stomach to tighten with wanting. But no. I could not be anyone's mate- let alone mate a she-cat. Hey, I could kill cats and people. I didn't have time to slow down and care for kits that probably weren't even mine. So as I lay my ice-blue eyes on her, I said, "Greetings, dear." My voice was deep and mysterious, and rumbled deep in my throat. I wanted to speak with her more, but I was very dangerous to her, and I couldn't take any risks. So I turned my head and strolled away, tail flicking.

Most she-cats would run screeching when they saw me coming, but this one walked right up to me and said 'Hello.' I rolled my eyes as I padded away into the night. My muscles were a little sore and my silent paws were starting to throb a little. I sniffed around an alley that smelled of fruit, and inspected it to make sure there were no rats or foxes. I found an old chair and leaped up onto it and curled up. I was asleep, but then again, I was not asleep.

My body may have been asleep, but my ears and eyes were not. Even the slightest breath could rouse me, and I sort of hated it. I never got any sleep, since cars or people coming by would instantly waking me. So I had many sleepless nights, and I was normally groggy in the morning. I sighed slightly, dreaming of the white cat.

My heart fluttered even more when he turned around and spoke to me. But my heart fell when he turned away and began walking away from me. I wanted to call out to him but instead I followed, slinking along in the shadows as best I could with my white coat. My heat scent wafted out behind me as I walked, spreading it even more.

When he turned into an alley I stopped and waited, staying in the shadows and trying to blend in. I noticed a little girl looking at me through a window from a house across the street. At my best guess she was at least 3 or 4. I couldn't resist smiling and flicking my tail at her. She smiled widely and waved at me. Then she disapeared from the window.

I turned my attention back to the alley. I could hear him breathing deeply, alerting me that he was asleep. I was half-tempted to go into the alley and snuggle up beside him but I thought better of it. I knew he was dangerous a startling him could be a fatal mistake. So I just layed down in the shadows, facing the alley. Soon my eyes closed and drifted to sleep.

I woke up with a start- a car horn honking. I groaned a little and tried to turn, but I ended up falling off the chair. I sighed, cross, and walked out of the alley. I strolled right past the white she-cat, and didn't notice her. I tasted the air, but due to morning grogginess, I didn't smell her. I decided to head to one of those morning cafe places, and I kept close to the shadows, my night-black coat blending into the dark.

I woke with a start as a car horn went off. I jumped up, startled, just in time to see Silent walk right by me. I immediatly calmed down and regained my posture, my heart still pounding from the car horn going off. Then I slunk out of the shadows, deciding to follow Silent. When he went to the cafe I paused and crouched down in the shadows, recognizing the place. It was were I had been dumped no longer than 4 months ago. I stayed down, waiting for Silent to notice me.

Silent sighed to himself as he pulled himself onto a dumpster, and turned his head. "I know you're there," I called in a deep, rumbling voice that was close to a growl. "Show yourself before I do it for you." How dare this cat... follow me? My claws unsheathed as I prepared to slash open the throat of the cat- no cat would follow me and live to tell the tale.

I stood slowly, not at all threatened by his comments. I stepped into view, my tail low to show I did not want to fight him. My ice blue eyes watched his as I slowly swayed my tail. Then I spoke, "I'm sorry I followed you. Now I wish I hadn't. This place is...where I was dumped 4 months ago by my human. I'm sorry again. I can leave if you wish me too." A few tears ran down her face as she remembered the human she thought had loved her.

I glanced at her tail, and gave a silent nod that it was lowered, which meant she wasn't an enemy. My ears flicked as she spoke, and I let out a cruel laugh before letting it stop abruptly. "And how is it my concern that your pitiful humans dumped you here?" I asked mockingly before digging through the trash. "And is it my fault or my concern that you can't take care of yourself?" I gulped down a sausage and looked over my shoulder and stared at the white she-cat with ice-cold blue eyes. "Now, go home, pet. You don't belong here." I turned my back on her once more and looked through the trash for another sausage.

"I can take care of myself. I've been here 4 months. And anyways my human hated me. He beat me. So I have NO intention what-so-ever of going back. I can survive out here. And I am NOT a PET!" I said, glaring at him. Then I spotted another dumpster and immediatly jumped into it. I rummaged through it and found some chicken. I jumped out of the dumpster and settled down beside it. Then I started eating the chicken I had found.

I flicked my tail at her once before gulping down another sausage and jumping out of the garbage can. My paws made no sound and led me to the entrance of the alley. "I'm out of here," I said coldly. "If I see you near me again..." I unsheathed my claws and narrowed my ice-blue eyes at her. Then I trotted off, keeping close to the shadows.

I watched him go for a moment. Then I stood up and called after him, "Silent, wait!" Then I realized that was probably not the best thing to do. So I just stood there, waiting to see what he would do.

My ear pricked and I turned to face her, the fur on my neck bristling. "What are your last words, pet?" I snarled.

My tail swayed gently and I took a deep breath then I said, "First of all, I'm not a pet. I never was. Second of all, I know you've always had other cats be afraid of you and cower in your presence. But I'm not afraid of you Silent. In fact, I'm intrigued by you. Ever since I first saw you I knew you weren't all that you seemed. You weren't that dangerous, mean, monster that everybody else saw. But I don't see that in you. I see a he-cat that can do a lot of damage, but also has a soft side that he never lets anyone see. Am I right, Silent? Or am I just a foolish she-cat that doesn't know what she's getting herself into?' My heart was pounding as I said those words because I knew how easily he could kill me. But I trusted him not to kill me. I fixed my icy blue eyes on his and waited for a response.

My eyes widened. Before I knew it, I had pounced on her, my claws digging into her shoulders. "Who told you that?" I snarled, my ice-blue eyes digging into hers. "Where did you get it from?" I may have been a murderer, but... I didn't start as one. The first kill was an accident... then I just kept doing it and doing it until this strange cat put a curse on me... so here I am, a murderer, killing cats and humans when I please. I have no heart, and I never wanted one.

I yelped when he jumped on me, his claws digging into my shoulders. "No one told me that. I could just sense you weren't like what everyone assumed. I can always tell when someone isn't all they seem. And I can sense that you, Silent, are MORE than you seem, even though you don't want anyone to see that side of you." My heart was still pounding but I was still trusting him not to kill me.

My heart beated hard in my chest and I narrowed my ice-blue eyes. I tried to ignore her words, but they kept thumping in my head. I shoved myself off of her and hissed, "You're lucky I don't kill you right now. You're not worth it." Then I turned and stalked off, my tail lashing.

I watched him go. Then I sat down and gazed up at the sky. The moon was full tonight, almost blotting out the stars surrounding it. I got up and spotted and gutter. I ran over to it and climbed up onto the roof. I started to run along it, not realizing I was getting to be right above Silent. I laughed as I jumped in between two roofs and landed on the next one, enjoying the wind on my fur. I had always prefered the night to the day.

I bristled slightly as I heard laughing, and glanced up to see the white she-cat from earlier darting around over the roofs. I smirked evily and began to climb up the gutter. Now will be my revenge... I unsheathed my claws and flexed them, imagining her throat underneath my paws.

When I came to the next opening between two roofs I didn't jump to the next one. Instead I jumped off of it. I did a few flips and turns, my agile body easily completing them. I landed on the ground gracefully on my paws. I trotted, still unaware of Silent. I went to a little opening next to a house, looked around to make sure no one was around, then, seeing no one, I ducked inside. I went up to the tiny black kitten that was curled up in a ball at the back of the opening. She was my only kitten from my last litter. I nudged her gently, trying to wake her up.

Nightmare

I opened my eyes and stared up at my mother sleepily. When I recognized her I exclaimed, "Mom!" and jumped up. I rubbed against her left front leg, happy to see her.

My eyes brightened as I caught sight of the kit. My ice-blue eyes gleamed and my claws dug into the ground, but I knew I would have to strike later, when Mystic wasn't around. I turned and stalked off, waiting until the moon was full.
