The Fire Within (Chapter 1)
Black fingernails curled over the bike's handle bars, the fingers squeezing so hard they were now turning purple and blue. Heat pounded down on the black asphalt of the road, sending waves of hot air up at whoever walked on them. Beads of sweat ran down the girl's forehead and she pedaled down the road. Baylee skidded to a stop, sending rocks flying into the ditch just up ahead. A bare foot landed on the road, sending a singe of hot pain up Baylee's leg. She pretended she didn't notice. As she reached the grass, she looked back one last time, took a deep breath, then ran. She ran so fast and hard her feet seemed to not touch the ground. her long brown hair was sent flying behind her. The bike lay there, at the dead end, stained with little beads of blood from the girl's hard grip.
Baylee ran for about a mile into the wilderness until she stopped. The sun would soon go down, and then the predators of the forest would come out. That meant wolves, coyotes, and snakes. Using the last bit of her strength, she pulled herself up into a tree, high enough so nothing could get her. And no, snakes in southern Louisiana cannot climb trees. She lay on a thick willow as she watched the sun go down. Before she knew it, Baylee was asleep. When she awoke, the sun was barely peeking out of the clouds. Her 'parents' were probably freaking out right now. Or not. The second one was probably correct. Baylee let the thought slip from her mind as she climbed down from the tree. Now, Baylee had to find a source of water somewhere. Her bare feet stepped on the cool, soft summer grass. It was wet with dew. Baylee knew there was a river somewhere, and that it could be her temporary home. Much more things would have to be arranged later, but she needed to find that river. Slinging the small bag on her back over her shoulder, she took out the temporary bottled water of three she had packed. She could spare this one. Along with the water, there was nuts, beef jerky, 'The Hunger Games', a pocket knife, and her iPhone. Of course she didn't come prepared for survival. Baylee would contact who she wanted to, and have something to do no matter what. All she need was that internal fire. the motive to go on. To survive. She was sure she had it before, but now that she actually followed through with her plan, to run away, she wasn't so sure. Baylee had left behind her adoptive family, her friends, her pet, her school, her dance. Dancing. The thought of twirling around on her toes played in her head. Leaps, turns, and smiles of girls flipped around and over. Now, now of all times, she wasn't sure at all. She had given up her dream. For what, a life in the woods of Louisiana?
